Representation axis

Democratic vs Autocratic

Who should choose the people in charge, and how much say should the public have?

At the Democratic end are people who want citizens to vote on issues directly; a little further in are supporters of classic representative democracy. Toward the Autocratic end, people see elections as slow, emotional or easily captured, and prefer leadership chosen by merit, birth or party.

Democratic

Leaders get their authority from the people, through elections or direct votes, and can be removed the same way.

Statements that score Democratic

  • “Direct democracy is the best form of government.”
  • “Elections are an effective way of showing government approval.”
  • “Democracy is more than a decision-making process.”

Autocratic

Good government needs firm leadership that is not at the mercy of public mood, whether a single ruler, a party or an appointed elite.

Statements that score Autocratic

  • “Elections are a waste of resources.”
  • “A hierarchical state is best.”
  • “Democracy is inefficient and slow.”
