From 8values to 12 Axes: How Multi-Dimensional Political Quizzes Evolved

A look at the lineage of open-source political tests, from 8values and 9axes to the comprehensive 12-axis model.

#History#Comparison#Methodology

Online political tests have come a long way since the early 2000s two-axis charts. The open-source community in particular has driven a quiet revolution in how political leanings are measured and visualized.

Here is the story behind the progression from 8values to 12 Axes.

The Milestone: 8values

Released in 2017, 8values introduced the concept of four dichotomous axes:

  • Economy: Equality vs. Wealth
  • Diplomacy: Peace vs. Nation
  • Civil: Liberty vs. Authority
  • Society: Tradition vs. Progress

Instead of placing participants on a single dot in a 2D box, 8values provided four separate percentage bars. This made it immediately clearer that someone could be economically egalitarian yet culturally conservative, or libertarian yet nationalistic.

Expanding to 9axes

As political debates diversified, community creators recognized that key issues remained conflated. 9axes broke several combined values apart, separating democracy vs. authority from federal vs. unitary structures, and introducing secularism as its own distinct metric.

The Modern 12 Axes Model

The 12Axes test, originally created by open-source contributors and popularized widely across community forums, represents the most granular evolution of this format:

  1. Separating trade from diplomacy: In older tests, international cooperation and free trade were often treated as the same position. The 12 Axes separates Internationalist vs. Nationalist (diplomatic cooperation) from Protectionist vs. Globalist (tariffs and trade barriers).
  2. Dedicated Technology axis: Technological acceleration and bioconservatism are distinct modern issues not reducible to economic left or right.
  3. Refined Governance: Distinguishing Democratic vs. Autocratic from Federal vs. Unitary and Security vs. Freedom.

Our Improvements in The 12 Axes

While keeping the question bank and scoring algorithm faithful to the original 12Axes open-source project, our implementation solves key usability issues:

  • Automatic progress saving: Never lose answers on a tab refresh.
  • Fixed ideology mapping: Correcting the upstream bug that incorrectly linked trade scores instead of diplomacy scores to ideological matches.
  • Direct comparisons: Side-by-side comparison URLs without requiring screenshots.
  • Full mobile responsiveness: Modern touch-friendly UI and localized explanations for every single axis.
